MCB/DDS Train the Trainer Project
for Human Guide & Vision Loss Sensitivity

Home  >  Training
About
Train the Trainer Project for Human Guide & Vision Loss Sensitivity  (HGVLS) is a collaborative program presented by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS), the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), The Carroll Center for the Blind and MAB Community Services.  The goals of the Project are to strengthen outreach for training on Human Guide and Vision Loss Sensitivity to co-workers at the agency where the Trainer is employed to address:
  • Colleague to colleague training for new staff and/or
  • Refresher training for existing supervisors and staff
The training is virtual and free, but application is required.
How it Works
Due to the virtual format, at least two Trainers are needed from each Agency (and available to work together in person for a two hour session with a third colleague to follow with a cell phone/camera, providing live video with a COMS***).
  1. Selected trainers will be mailed materials, including a training agenda, “Let’s Walk Together” DVD, handouts, occluders, attendance forms, etc. needed to conduct small group in-services on Human Guide & Vision Loss Sensitivity.
  2. Trainers will also be emailed a link for “Train the Trainer Google Classroom – Human Guide and Vision Loss Sensitivity”.
  3. Trainers must thoroughly read and review all Training Materials and Resource Handouts posted via the “Train the Trainer Google Classroom” and answer a 3-5 question quiz regarding each over a month-long period.
  4. ***At the end of the month, and after all Training Materials and Resource Handouts have been reviewed, a virtual a 2-hour session (inclusive of breaks) will be scheduled with our team of Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialists.  Activities during the virtual session will include discussion as well as sitting, walking and being guided while wearing a blindfold.  This session requires the two Trainers to be present in person together with a third colleague to follow with a cell phone/camera, providing live video with a COMS.
  5. Each Trainer candidate must meet specific requirements, including the passing of a multiple-choice test, to receive the Human Guide Trainer Certificate of Completion.
Collaboration & Follow–Up
Trainers for Human Guide and Vision Loss Sensitivity will receive ongoing support, including an invitation to attend an annual virtual meeting with fellow Human Guide & Vision Loss Sensitivity (HGVLS) trainers from across each DDS Region.
